About Dr. Abtin
As an innovative radiation oncologist, Dr. Fereidoun Abtin specializes in minimally invasive, multidisciplinary treatment of pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer and thymomas.
Abtin serves as the director of the Thoracic Imaging Research Laboratory and the UCLA Health Santa Monica Outpatient Imaging and Interventional Center, where he has built a leading lung biopsy practice.
Through his research and various clinical trials, he has helped develop a variety of novel treatments for thoracic diseases.
Abtin uses microwave and radiofrequency ablation techniques. He also has pioneered the use of cryoablation, also known as cryosurgery or cryotherapy.
Cryoablation involves freezing localized tumors with argon gas or liquid nitrogen. It traditionally has been used for prostate, liver and kidney cancers. Abtin has utilized it in combination with immunotherapy as a second-line treatment for pleural mesothelioma.
Abtin graduated from Kasturba Medical College in India and finished his education with a fellowship at the UCLA School of Medicine.
