Packing Materials - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks

Who hasn't come into contact with packing materials at some point or another? While today's packing materials are very safe and really do help protect your packages, this was not also the case. Packing materials once contained asbestos, a natural material that is mined in many countries. Asbestos, although natural, is very dangerous. Exposure to asbestos is the only known way to contract a dangerous form of cancer called mesothelioma. Many people have died due to asbestos exposure, so if you worked in the shipping industry in the past, you should see your doctor right away to get tested for mesothelioma. Catching this caner early is your key to survival.

Asbestos was a dream material for manufacturers because it was cheap, yet still strong, durable, flexible, insulating, heat-resistant, and lightweight. For the shipping industry especially, asbestos was highly used because of these properties. However, its fibrous nature causes mesothelioma, so this product wasn't as perfect as it at first seemed.

This wasn't an unfortunately accident, however. Many companies found out about the devastating qualities of asbestos on a person's health in the early 1930s. Mesothelioma, although dangerous, did not overcome the need for manufacturers to produce products for a low cost. Mesothelioma is very hard to treat because most people don't discover they have it until it has affected the whole body. Mesothelioma begins when asbestos enters the body, either when a person breathes it in or swallows it. The asbestos fibers are very jagged, and they embed in or tear the soft tissues lining the heart, lungs, or stomach. Over time, the scar tissues cells may mutate, causing mesothelioma. The mesothelioma can then travel through the bloodstream to all parts of the body. If the mesothelioma tumor grow big enough, it will begin to affect the way your organs function. However, before that, you may not know that the mesothelioma is developing. In fact, many people don't know that they have mesothelioma until many years after initial exposure to asbestos.

Virtually everyone has been exposed to asbestos at some point or another, and you shouldn't panic if you received a package filling with packing materials before 1980. The real danger here is to people who worked in the shipping industry. If you had direct contact with asbestos as contained in packing materials every day, as you would in a shipping center, you may be at risk for developing mesothelioma. You should see a doctor right away to discuss your asbestos concerns.

It is also important to remember that you have legal rights. Because the dangers of asbestos and mesothelioma were hidden from the general public and from employees, you could be able to take advantage of funds set up by major companies as settlements for victims.
