Other TopicsFire Doors - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks
Many fire retardant products used to be made with asbestos, including fire doors. For years, fire doors were made with asbestos because it is durable and cost efficient. The asbestos fibers are very strong and make for a great fire retardant material, which made the product a great use for fire doors. However, we know now that asbestos is a harmful material that can cause severe health problems.
Fire doors are a safety measure that are used in many buildings. The idea behind fire doors is to help compartmentalize a fire if one should erupt. By having fire doors, fires can be contained to smaller areas instead of spreading throughout the building, which helps to minimize the damage and dangers for people in the building. Asbestos was commonly used in the making of fire doors, however most of those products have now been removed from the public because of the health problems and diseases associated with asbestos including mesothelioma cancer.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the heart, lungs, or abdomen. Mesothelioma is considered to be a rare type of cancer, however it accounts of three percent of cancer related deaths each year and 2,000 new cases are reported annually. The only known cause for mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. This deadly cancer does not respond to common cancer treatments such as chemo and radiation therapies.
Today, fire doors are made without using asbestos, however there is a possibility that some buildings still have asbestos fire doors in them, although there has been a number of asbestos fire doors removed from public buildings.
For constructions workers who helped with the construction of buildings using asbestos fire doors, and the people who worked for manufacturing companies that made asbestos fire doors, there is a possibility of mesothelioma cancer and other asbestos related diseases such as asbestosis.
There is no direct link to the amount of asbestos exposure and frequency or likelihood of being diagnosed with mesothelioma. There are people with very limited asbestos fire door exposure that have been diagnosed, while others with frequent or major exposure are never diagnosed.
The symptoms of mesothelioma can take between 15 and 40 years to develop, which makes it very difficult to determine the source of the asbestos exposure. It is important to note that the only linked cause of mesothelioma cancer is asbestos exposure. However, asbestos was a very common building material and was used in many products that were used to construct homes and buildings, including fire doors, so it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact product or company that caused the asbestos exposure for some.
When a person is diagnosed with mesothelioma, there is very little a doctor can do except to improve quality of life. For the families and loved ones of mesothelioma cancer victims, there is help, at least financially.
A mesothelioma lawyer is a lawyer who specializes in asbestos exposure cases and they can help you launch a lawsuit for asbestos fire doors that have caused mesothelioma in yourself or in your family member.
Money won in a mesothelioma lawsuit will not provide relief from loss of life nor will it replace it, however it can replace lost wages, and help with funeral and medical expenses. Contact a mesothelioma lawyer regarding your case to see if you have a lawsuit that you can file against the manufacturers of asbestos fire doors.
