Other TopicsFire Dampers - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks
There are many products that contain asbestos and many of those products are fire retardant products such as fire dampers. Fire dampers are a safety precaution that are used primarily in buildings to compartmentalize fires should they arise. A fire damper is a fire retardant product that contained asbestos until the health concerns and dangers associated with asbestos were known. Fire dampers are installed in walls and ceilings of buildings to stop fires from spreading.
Asbestos was used to create fire dampers for many reasons. Asbestos is durable and cost efficient. The asbestos fibers are nearly indestructible and are a great fire retardant, making them exceptional for use in fire dampers. However, now it is known that asbestos is harmful to health and can cause serious health problems and diseases such as mesothelioma cancer.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. It is considered to be a rare type of cancer, however it accounts of three percent of cancer related deaths each year and 2,000 new cases are reported annually. The only known cause for mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. This deadly cancer does not respond to common cancer treatments such as chemo and radiation therapies.
Many buildings made use of asbestos fire dampers as a safety precaution for fires and to keep fires from spreading throughout a populated building. Today, fire dampers are made without asbestos, however there is a possibility that some buildings still have asbestos fire dampers in them, although there has been a big drive to remove asbestos products, such as fire dampers, from the public.
For people who constructed buildings using asbestos fire dampers, and the workers who made asbestos fire dampers, there is a possibility of mesothelioma cancer and other asbestos related diseases such as asbestosis. However, there is no direct correlation to the amount of asbestos exposure and e frequency or likelihood of being diagnosed with mesothelioma. There are people with very limited asbestos fire damper exposure that have been diagnosed, while others with frequent or major exposure are never diagnosed.
It can take between 15 and 40 years for symptoms of mesothelioma cancer to show up, making it a major issue to determine the cause of the disease. Only asbestos exposure is linked to mesothelioma cancer, but in years past, there were many materials in buildings, including homes and public buildings that used asbestos, including fire dampers.
When a victim is diagnosed with mesothelioma, there is little that a doctor can do except to improve quality of life. For the families and loved ones of mesothelioma cancer victims, there is help and hope. A qualified mesothelioma lawyer can help you launch a lawsuit for asbestos laden fire dampers that have caused mesothelioma in yourself or in your family member.
While money won in a lawsuit will not replace a life, it can help to improve the quality of life for the victim as well as for the families by paying for medical expenses, funeral expenses and lost wages.
Most fire dampers that used asbestos have been removed and asbestos is no longer used to create this product. There is also a stream of education regarding the use of asbestos and how to handle it should you come across it. For decades, thousands of products were made using asbestos making it difficult to narrow down the culprit causing the cancer. However, if you worked with fire dampers in construction or made them for construction companies, then you should speak to a mesothelioma lawyer to talk about a lawsuit.
