Emulsion Adhesive - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks

Emulsion adhesive is an adhesive that is used to bond synthetic laminates to timber and wood, such as roofing tiles, floor tiles and more. With so many uses, emulsion adhesive is used in many places and has been for decades. In the past, primarily around the time of World War II and before, and for years afterwards, emulsion adhesive contained asbestos, which is now known to be quite dangerous for workers and can lead to numerous health problems and diseases, including mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer of the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen, that makes up approximately three per cent of cancer related deaths each year. While this cancer is considered to be rare, it accounts for nearly 2,000 new cases each year. Mesothelioma's only known cause is asbestos exposure and this cancer does not respond to common cancer treatments such as chemo and radiation therapies.

Many people who worked with emulsion adhesives, including the creation of emulsion adhesive, are at risk for mesothelioma. Anyone who has come into contact with asbestos, regardless of the level of exposure is at risk for this deadly cancer. Due to the fact that emulsion adhesives are used quite commonly for the installation of many products, there are thousands of people who've been exposed to asbestos and may not even know it.

There is no direct correlation between the levels of asbestos exposure and contracting mesothelioma. There are people who have very little exposure to emulsion adhesives that have contracted the disease, while others who worked regularly with asbestos laden emulsion adhesive that do not contract mesothelioma. Everyone, no matter how extreme or miniscule the exposure to asbestos can have mesothelioma.

Asbestos fibers that are used in emulsion adhesive are very thin but very strong. They are described as being virtually indestructible. Because they are so thin, they are easily inhaled and if they become lodged in the lining of the heart, abdomen or lungs, the body is powerless to rid themselves of the fiber. This lodged fiber becomes inflamed and causes mesothelioma cancer. With so many products using emulsion adhesives, and the production of emulsion adhesive peaking during the time when asbestos use was high, there are thousands of people who've been exposed to asbestos emulsion adhesive that may not even realize it.

There was a time that construction was booming and asbestos emulsion adhesive was used frequently - in homes, office buildings, warehouses, and more. It was a durable product that did its job for less money than other similar emulsion adhesive products that didn't contain asbestos. It's a sad fact that asbestos emulsion adhesives are much stronger and cheaper than those that do not contain asbestos, and at the time, that was what counted.

Most people didn't know the effects of asbestos emulsion adhesives on health, however many emulsion adhesive companies had learned of the safety issues with asbestos emulsion adhesives, yet many of these companies did nothing to protect their workers. People who now, some 15 to 40 years later, finding out they have mesothelioma and that they will perish from it because nothing works to cure it.
