Other TopicsElectrical Cloth - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks
Asbestos was commonly used in the past as insulation for electrical devices, and many insulating products such as electrical cloth, were made with asbestos. Electrical cloth is used to wrap electrical wires to insulate them, and in former times, before the dangers of asbestos were known, much of the electrical cloth used to insulate wires contained asbestos fibers.
The reason for the use of asbestos was simple - asbestos fibers are sturdy and long lasting and they make great insulation. However, now people are more aware of the health effects that asbestos has on people who breathe in these fibers. The asbestos fibers are easily inhaled and can become lodged in the pleura (the lining of the lungs), or in the lining of the heart or abdomen. Over time these lodged fibers become inflamed and can bring on mesothelioma cancer, asbestosis or other asbestos related diseases. However, the symptoms of these diseases do not show up for 15 to 40 years after exposure, making it difficult to pinpoint the cause of the disease.
Just one of these causes can be the electrical cloth that is used to insulate wires. For people who worked to manufacture electrical cloth, their exposure levels were quite high, which technically increases their risks of mesothelioma. However, people who worked in buildings or lived in homes that used asbestos-laden electrical cloth are also at risk. There is no definitive amount of exposure that causes mesothelioma - people with little exposure have contracted mesothelioma while others with major exposure have not. However, mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure, and there are no studies to show that it can be caused by any other means.
It is also the families of people who manufactured electrical cloth, or worked near electrical cloth that are also at risk. The fibers that are used to make electrical cloth and other insulation products were easily taken home as they clung to hair, skin, clothing and shoes and then dislodged at home, putting the families at risk for mesothelioma as well. Not to mention that there may have also been electrical cloth insulation used in the home as well.
The manufacturers and makers of electrical cloth didn't know the ramifications of asbestos, and it wasn't until later in years after World War II that people began to understand that asbestos is a dangerous material, regardless of its strength and capacity as insulation and being used for products such as electrical cloth. Throughout the war years, asbestos use was at an all-time high, being used in shipyards as well as in building products throughout the country.
For people who were part of the manufacturing process to make electrical cloth and use it on electrical wiring and devices, the threat of asbestos related diseases is very real. The types of electrical cloth that were made using asbestos were prevalent in homes and other buildings and some may still be in existence today. It is important to check your homes for electrical cloth that used asbestos for insulation. Most businesses and homes have found asbestos laden electrical cloth and changed the electrical cloth to a more suitable product.
If you or someone you know worked with electrical cloth or lived somewhere that had asbestos electrical cloth, contact a qualified mesothelioma lawyer to discuss your case and the potential for launching a suit against the companies that made electrical cloth.
