Furnace Cement - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks

Asbestos used to be used in the fabrication of many different products including furnace cement. Furnace cement is used around boilers and furnaces and was used to cement fire brick in place. The purpose of furnace cement and fire brick was to quarantine a fire if one should erupt and keep it in a closed in space to prevent it from spreading throughout a building.

Asbestos was a common product used for fire retardant materials such as furnace cement because of its resiliency, fire retardant properties, durability and cost effectiveness. However, at the time that asbestos was in constant use, the health ramifications were not well known by most people. Today, furnace cement is not made with asbestos and much of the asbestos furnace cement has been removed and replaced with non-asbestos furnace cement and fire brick.

Asbestos is now known to cause serious health problems and cancer called mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a fatal cancer that is not cured by conventional cancer treatments such as radiation or chemo therapy. The cancer is of the mesothelium, the lining surrounding most of the internal organs. Mesothelioma is most common in the pleura, the lining of the lungs, but has also been seen in the lining of the heart or abdomen.

While data show that mesothelioma is a rather unusual type of cancer, only causing three per cent of yearly cancer-related deaths in the US, there are some 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma reported each year. The only known cause for mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos products such as furnace cement.
